Odor Investigation at Hampton Inn off Highway 66

IMG_8468A Neptune Fire Department “General Alarm” was transmitted on October 11 at 11:18 pm for a reported odor of gas at 4 McNamara Drive – the Hampton Inn Hotel off Highway 66.

Unexcelled Fire Company Ladder 34-4-90 with 8 firefighters responded.

Upon arrival, Unexcelled firefighters, using gas detection equipment, checked the interior of the hotel, the natural gas service connections and a general check of the exterior of the hotel property.  No odor of natural gas was detected.

Neptune Township Emergency Management Haz-Mat team representatives were also on scene.  The possible source of the odor was determined to be from the Monmouth County Landfill in bordering Tinton Falls.

Unexcelled Fire Company and Neptune OEM were assisted by the Neptune Police and Neptune EMS.

 

Unexcelled Firefighter Remembered at County Ceremony

Members of the Unexcelled Fire Company attended the annual Fallen Firefighters and Medal Day Ceremony, held on October 5 at the Monmouth County Fire Academy.

All fallen firefighters in the county are remembered in the annual service, including Unexcelled Firefighter Lloyd Layton.

Firefighter Layton was tragically killed while answering a fire alarm call in March of 1927.  The 47 year old apparatus chauffeur was pronounced dead at the Ann May Memorial Hospital in Spring Lake.

 

“We are very honored to attend and pay our respects each and every year to Lloyd”, said Unexcelled Fire Company President Robert McDonald.  “The county does an outstanding and very honorable job”, he said.

During the ceremony, and as is done annually, an Unexcelled Firefighter places a rose on the county’s fallen firefighter memorial.

The following Unexcelled Firefighters attended the service:  FF Nick Megill, FF Philip Williams, FF Otis Henderson, FF Kahlil Jeter and FF Matthew Coleman.

 

 

Accident at Main Avenue and Main Street closes intersection

Unexcelled Firefighters responded to motor vehicle accident at Main Street and Main Avenue on September 24 at 9:04 PM.

The accident involved a single vehicle that struck the intersections light stanchion, causing it to fall.

The driver was treated by Neptune EMS at the scene.

The intersection was shut down by police due to the loss of electric to the traffic lights and the downed traffic signal.

Along with Unexcelled Engine 34-4-75, Neptune Office of Emergency Management, Neptune EMS and Neptune Police were on scene.

Unexcelled Fire received F.A.S.T. Team Certification

On August 26, the Unexcelled Fire Company was once again “certified” as a F.A.S.T. team in accordance with Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office guidelines.

For the past ten years, the Unexcelled Fire Company has held this certification, which is valid for a period of three year.  After the three years it is reviewed and can be renewed.

Ocean County has a formalized program that includes an inspection by the Chief Fire Marshal who reviews staffing certifications, equipment, operating guidelines and other factors.

The Unexcelled Fire Company has maintained an active Rapid Intervention Team since the late 1990’s, and was one of the first in Monmouth County.  They are generally referred to as the “model” by the Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office and are very reliable.

For more that 15 years, Unexcelled Firefighters have worked incredibly hard, and have dedicate much time and their personal money to equip themselves and attend training classes.  Several members travelled to Clearwater Florida at their own expense to attend advanced firefighter rescue training classes.

Today, the Unexcelled Fire Company response mutual aid to twelve neighboring towns as a Rapid Intervention Team, and are also called beyond those twelve towns as need and when called.

Neptune Firefighters at Neptune Day event

Unexcelled Firefighters were in attendance supporting Neptune Day, which was held on September 20th at town hall on Neptune Blvd.

Neptune Day featured booths representing the Neptune Police Department, Neptune Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Neptune Office of Emergency Management (OEM), township departments such as Code, Building, Senior Center, Library and others.

Vendors were also on site with food and beverages.  And there was plenty of kids activities including bounce-houses, pony rides, a animal petting area, face painting and more.

Although Unexcelled Fire Company was not permitted to have Engine 34-4-75 or Ladder 34-4-90 on the site, company members were their supporting Neptune Township and the community.

7th Annual Cigar Dinner in Long Branch

09182014 Long Branch Cigar DinnerMembers of the Unexcelled Fire Company attended the 7th Annual Cigar Dinner Fund Raiser in support of Long Branch Firefighters FMBA Local 68.  The event was held on September 18 at Rooney’s Restaurant along Ocean Avenue in Long Branch.

Unexcelled Fire Company responds to all working fires in the City of Long Branch and are big supporters of their friends at Local 68.

The annual event features a Gift Auction, Raffles and buffet meal including dessert.

Smoke Condition at Neptune Rehabilitation facility

A General Alarm was transmitted 1:33pm on September 14 for a smoke condition at 101 Walnut Street – Neptune Rehabilitation for a smoke condition.

Unexcelled Engine 34-4-75 and Ladder 34-4-90 responded.  Upon arrival, firefighters found a smoke condition in the kitchen and utility area.

Residents in the adjoining area were evacuated/relocated by Neptune OEM and EMS personnel as a precaution.

Firefighters investigated and found that a rooftop HVAC unit was malfunctioning and generating the smoke condition.  The unit was shut down and secured.

There were no injuries on scene.

Unexcelled Fire Company was assisted by Neptune Office of Emergency Management (OEM), EMS, Shark River Hills Fire Company and Ocean Grove Fire Department.

Unexcelled Firefighters at Community Day event

Community Day is held each year at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

This event, running from 11am to 2pm on Sunday, September 14, features a  “Heart and Sole” 5K Run/Walk, a Kids Race, Games, Face Paintin, a Free Healthy Lunch from Branches Catering and more.

Unexcelled Fire Company attends the event every year.  Engine 34-4-75 is displayed and fire prevention coloring books, hats and other free gifts are handed out.

“Unexcelled Fire Company has an outstanding relationship with our hospital”, said Unexcelled Captain Donald Colarusso.  “And we take every opportunity to attend and participate in community events – it is so important”.

 

 

Unexcelled places 2nd in “Move for Hunger” Truck Pull

09132014 Neptune Truck PullaThe first annual “Truck Pull” event was held at the Headliner Night Club on September 13, 2014.  This event was a benefit for the MOVE FOR HUNGER organization – a hunger relief organization that works with relocation companies to collect extra food from people who don’t need it, and deliver it to food banks all across North America.

Unexcelled Fire Company participated in the event, along with our partners from the Neptune Office of Emergency Management.

Teams of 10 competed in a timed competition to see who could pull a truck in the fastest time.  12 teams participated, and the Unexcelled Fire Company team finished in Second Place!

However, the best part is event is that the proceeds go directly to Move For Hunger organization, which is based right here in Neptune Township.

Two Alarm Fire on Atkins Avenue

09112014 Neptune Atkins Ave FireA Neptune Fire Department “General Alarm” was transmitted on September 11 at 8:25pm for a reported structure fire at 707 Atkins Avenue off of Hwy 33.  Unexcelled Engine 34-4-75 was first due and found heavy smoke from the first floor porch.  Crews entered and began searching for the seat of the fire, but initially were unable to locate.

Unexcelled Ladder 34-4-90 was the first due truck and quickly conduced horizontal ventilation.

A second line was stretched to the basement.  The fire was located deep in the basement, and was quickly confined and extinguished.  There was some extension to the first floor that was also quickly knocked down.

Primary and secondary searches were negative.  The two-story single family dwelling was vacant at the time of the fire.

There were no injuries.

The fire is under investigation by the Neptune Fire Marshal, the Monmouth County Fire Marshals Office and the Neptune Police.

In addition to the Unexcelled Fire Company, Neptune’s Shark River Hills, Hamilton and Liberty fire companies were also on scene.  Mutual aid companies from Ocean Grove and Tinton Falls responded to assist.  All firefighters did a tremendous job!

This was the second multiple alarm fire that Unexcelled Fire Company responded to on this date.
